Exam 3 - Inflammatory Bowel Disease Flashcards
Anti-inflammatory. Nephrotoxic so monitor BUN and creatinine. Do CBC on occasion
Mesalamine (Asacol)
Corticosteroid. Helps decrease inflammation. Used in acute phase.
Prednisone (Deltasone)
Benzodiazepine. Decreases GI motility. Goal in acute phase is to rest bowels for healing.
Diazepam (Valium)
Risk for toxic megacolon with ulcerative colitis means pt will not receive
Antidiarrheals
Antibiotic that works as an anti-inflammatory
Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)
Used for immunosuppression
Methotrexate, cyclosporine
Eliminate milk and milk products why?
They exacerbate diarrhea and inflammation
Why is dietary fiber decreased in acute phase?
Bowel rest
What is a low-residue, high-protein diet?
Saltine crackers, white bread, white rice, meats as long as they are bland and not fried
Why should a pt eat smaller meals?
Big meals cause GI tract to work harder
Fecal matter builds up and colon enlarges, which changes dynamics of fluid gradient. Lots of fluid going in causing electrolyte and fluid imbalance. If large enough can perforate and cause bleeding.
Ulcerative colitis complication - toxic megacolon
Complication of ulcerative colitis
Colorectal cancer
Long term complication of Crohn’s
Colon cancer
Short term complications of Crohn’s
Fistulas, abscess formation, malabsorption
