Sudden change in bowel habits and/or stool consistency (earlier sign)
Rectal bleeding

A

Just prior to surgery. Used to remove secretions, empty stomach contents, decompress stomach and keep bowel rested

Assessment post-surgery for colostomy

A

Assess color of stoma
Maintain NG suction
Monitor resp status
Monitor response to diet, presence of bowel sounds
Assess for abd distention, bowel obstruction
Monitor for rectal bleeding
Monitor for paralytic ileus, obstruction, peritonitis, abscess formation, infection, wound disruption, wound infection, presence of fistula
