Iliacus-
Origin: Iliac fossa
Insertion: lesser trochanter
Action: hip flexion, external rotation, anterior pelvic rotation, flexion and lateral flexion of lumbar spine, transverse and lateral pelvic rotation to contralateral side
Psoas-
Origin: Transverse process of lumbar vertebrae
Insertion: Lesser trochanter, pectineal line
Action: hip flexion, external rotation, anterior pelvic rotation, flexion and lateral flexion of lumbar spine, transverse and lateral pelvic rotation to contralateral side
Sartorius
Origin: ASIS
Insertion: upper, anterior-medial tibia
Action: hip flexion, external rotation, abduction, knee
flexion, anterior pelvic rotation, weak knee
internal rotation
Rectus Femoris
Origin: Anterior head-AIIS. Posterior head-upper acetabulum margin
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
Action: hip flexion, knee extension, anterior pelvic
rotation
Pectineus
Origin: superior ramus of pubis
Insertion: lesser trochanter to linea aspera (pectineal line)
Action: adduction, flexion, external rotation, anterior pelvic rotation
Adductor Brevis
Origin: inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion: upper 1/2 medial linea aspera, lower 2/3rds of pectineal line
Action: adduction, external rotation, assists in flexion & anterior pelvic rotation
Adductor longus
Origin: inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion: upper 1/2 medial linea aspera, lower 2/3rds of
pectineal line
Action: adduction, external rotation, assists in flexion & anterior pelvic rotation
Adductor Magnus
Origin: inferior ramus of pubis, ischium
Insertion: linea aspera, adductor tubercle of femur

Gracilis
Origin: anteromedial edge of inferior ramus
Insertion: upper, anterior-medial surface of tibia
Action: hip adduction, internal rotation, assists with
flexion of the hip, weak knee flexion, weak knee internal rotation
Biceps femoris
Origin: long head=ischial tuberosity
short head=1/2 down linea aspera
Insertion: fibular head, lateral condyle of tibia
Action: knee flexion, hip extension, hip external rotation, knee external rotation, posterior pelvic rotation
Semimembranosus
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: posterior part of the medial condyle of tibia
Action: knee flexion, hip extension, hip internal rotation, knee internal rotation, posterior pelvic rotation
Semitendinosus
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: upper anterior-medial part of shaft of tibia
Action: knee flexion, hip extension, hip internal rotation, knee internal rotation, posterior pelvic rotation
Gluteus maximus
Origin: posterior 1/4th of iliac crest, posterior sacrum/coccyx
Insertion: IT band, greater trochanter
Action: hip extension, external rotation, hip abduction (upper fibers), hip adduction (lower fibers), posterior pelvic rotation
Gluteus medius
Origin: lateral surface of ilium just below the crest
Insertion: greater trochanter
Action: abduction, flexion & internal rotation & anterior pelvic rotation (anterior fibers), extension & external rotation & posterior pelvic rotation (posterior fibers)
Gluteus minimus
Origin: lateral part of ilium below gluteus medius’ origin
Insertion: greater trochanter
Action: abduction, internal rotation, flexion, lateral pelvic rotation, anterior pelvic rotation
Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL)
Origin: ASIS
Insertion: IT band to Gerdy’s tubercle of the anterolateral tibial condyle
Action: abduction, hip flexion, internal rotation, lateral pelvic rotation, anterior pelvic rotation
