Exam 3 Flashcards
What makes up the brainstem?
Midbrain, pons, medulla
Responsible for lower level functions such as perception of loudness and pitch
Brainstem
Center for distribution of sensory activity
Thalamus
2 hemispheres separated by the longitudinal fissure
Cerebral cortex
What are the 2 parts of the ascending/afferent auditory pathway
Contralateral and ipsilateral
Main pathway of the ascending auditory pathway
Contralateral
Secondary pathway of the ascending auditory pathway
Ipsilateral
How does the acoustic nerve leave the cochlea?
Through the internal auditory meatus
First major nucleus of the central auditory system
Cochlear nucleus
What is the ascending auditory pathway?
Auditory nerve, cochlear nucleus, superior olivary complex, lateral meniscus, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body, auditory cortex
Same side as stimulated cochlea
Ipsilateral path
Opposite side as stimulated cochlea
Contralateral path
Juncture of decussating fibers between cochlear nucleus and the superior olivary complex
Trapezoid body
Where is the superior olivary complex located?
Medulla
Receives direct input from the cochlea; controls the reflex activity for the middle ear muscles
Superior olivary complex
