Exam 3 Flashcards
What are the four types of chemical reactions?
Synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement.
What defines a combustion reaction?
Something in the presence of O yields CO2 and H2O
In single displacement reactions with carbon and hydrogen what is typically yielded?
An elemental substance and H2O or CO2
What happens when chloride salts react with hydrogen?
The metal in the salt becomes a pure element and HCl is created.
The chemical formula for Hydrochloric acid
HCl
Acid properties
- -sour tast
- -dissolve metals
- -turn blue paper red
Base properties
- -Bitter taste
- -slippery feel
- -turn red blue
Acids
Formula has H as first element
Binary–> two elements
Oxyacid–>contain oxygen
Naming binary acid
hydro prefix-non-metal name- ic ending
Naming oxyacids
They contain oxyanions–> oxygen containing polyatomic ions. Alway H+ with a negative polyatomic ion.
If the polyatomic ion ends in -ate then it gets an -ic ending
If the polyatomic ion ends in -ite then it gets an ous ending.
Bronsted Lowry definition of acids and bases
An acid is a proton donor
A base is a proton acceptor
Conjugate pair
Any two substances related by the transfer of a proton
amphoteric solution
Any solution that can be an acid or a base
