exam 3 Flashcards
Stearns et al “Interracial Friendships” –> when students of different races enter college, what do their interracial relationships look like?
White students increased, Black students decreased
McPherson et al “Birds of a Feather”
4 types of homophily
Baker & O’Connell “Structural Racism, family structure”
states with a higher concentration of Black people in 1860 have larger racial disparities in poverty among households that are married with children. Families are poorer in states that seceded from the union
Smith, HTWIP “Whitney Plantation”
site of the largest slave revolt in history; employees were POC and had very honest representation; the central focus was the experience of the people who were enslaved
Rudder “Ok Trends” which groups are more likely to respond to messages; compatibility match percentage by race when it’s deciding who to suggest on profiles
By race, they’re roughly the same average for all racial pairings
“In Sickness and in Wealth” documentary
takes place in Louisville; people at the top of the power hierarchy have significantly less environmental stress and vice versa
Cerdena et al “From Race-Based to Race-Conscious Medicine”
race-based medicine is an assumption of different health problems; rooted in the idea that race is genetic. They propose race-conscious medicine which doesn’t emphasize race but racism. The most important recommendation is teaching medical students that racial health disparities are a consequence of structural racism
Cheah et al “Covid-19 Racism”
there needs to be increased attention paid to the mental health needs of Asian Americans who experienced Covid related racism
Park “Study of TV may perpetuate bias”
white characters received more positive treatment than Black characters; people’s perception of what was happening in TV shows
Deggans “More Evidence TV Doesn’t Reflect Real Life Diversity”: 3 major findings in this study: whether or not groups are over/underrepresented
Latino: under
Native: under
Black: over
Women: under
Harwood “The Evolution of Black Representation on Television”
color-blind casting describes casting a diverse group of actors but writing stories where the character’s racial identity and experience largely don’t matter to the story at all
“Digital Blackface” podcast
when non-Black people use GIFs of Black people to express an emotion. Usually, the reactions that are chosen are stereotypically Black reactions
Sewer “Colin Kaepernick’s True Sin”
the main critique that he got was that he wasn’t a victim of racial oppression. 3 reasons: adopted by White people, stupid rich, not 100% Black
homophily
the practice of associating w/ people who are similar to you; strongest among racial lines
baseline homophily
the amount of homophily that you would see based on the demographic breakdown of the place you live
inbreeding homophily
homophily that isn’t up to chance. Choice, preference
Status homophily
you choose your friends based on status identities
value homophily
you choose your friends because they have similar values to you
propinquity effect
the tendency for people to form friendships or relationships based on shared social status
mere exposure effect
the tendency for people to develop a preference for things merely because they’re familiar with them
ethnic nationalism
a small but committed subset of communities of color who fight against racial integration
Black nationalism
the solution to White supremacy can only be found in the strength of the Black community
civic participation
participating in activities related to citizenship or governing; positively related to income; latinos are just as likely as Whites to participate; Blacks are even more likely than Whites
Super Joiners
Black people because after you control for income, Black people have the highest participation rates in associational life
Moynahan Report
racial inequality is caused by single-Black mother families, not institutional inequality. Shifted the racial discourse from racial discrimination to pathological Black families
Antimiscenation Laws
laws that criminalized interracial marriage and sex
Mississippi appendectomy
the routine and involuntary removal of a woman of color’s uterus without her knowledge or consent. We learned about this through Fanny Lou Hamer who publicly spoke out against the government
Sexual racism
a stated preference for phenotypically White people or people who have features commonly associated with White people
Racial fetishism
making someone an object of sexual desire based solely on their racial identity; rooted in stereotypes and often objectification
testing
a strategy where POC feel out members of other racial/ethnic groups to evaluate their level of racial tolerance
masking
self-preservation that takes on an explicitly racialized character; wearing a mask around whom you aren’t comfortable
double consciousness
group-based; there are 2 different worlds POC live in
Looking glass self
when your self-perception and self-worth are influenced by the perception of others
racial genetic model
the idea that genetics or biological factors cause health disparities; little empirical evidence
socio-economic status model
socio-economic disparities cause health disparities
psych-social stress model
suggests that stress associated with and that comes as a result of institutional nd interpersonal racism causes health disparities
structural constructivist model
there are casual connections between race and health that are difficult to make; we shouldn’t be spending this time trying to explain it because race is a social construct
Covid-19 disparities
in texas, there were racial disparities in vaccine distribution/accessibility because there were pre-existing disparities in the health infrastructure
minstrel shows
involving White people performing stereotypical Blackness for White audiences
minstrelsy
white control over the representation of Blackness and non-Whiteness
3 Different aesthetics: white, racist, and non-racist
Whtie: presents an unraced representation of the social world with Whiteness as the default category
Racist: only represents POC in negative ways; white savior; whitewashing history, pretending racial domination doesn’t exist, and by depicting racism as a purely psychological issue
Anti-racist: generally equal representation for all racial groups and it sheds light on the true histories and current realities of racial domination
mediated spectacle
in the world of sports, games are televised, players are interviewed, etc. , so messages about players and their race come through in these mediated ways
1936 Berlin Olympics
Hitler wanted to use the Olympics to show the superiority of the Aryan race; What happened was that Black and Jewish Americans dominated the games; Jessie Owens set 4 world records; rebuffed the Nazi ideal of White supremacy
1968 Mexico City Olympics
in the height of CRE, racial tension was at its peak; some Black athletes made political statements. Tommy Smith and John Carlos put on black gloves and held up the Black power fist during the national anthem because they wanted to protest discrimination against African Americans in the U.S.
