exam 2: neuro outcome measures: acute care Flashcards
what is an outcome measure?
tool used to assess a patient’s current status
what do outcome measures do?
- identify baseline
- predict prognosis
- categorize patients
- communicate status
- determine appropriate intervention
- identify patient’s improvement
what 3 main purposes do outcome measures serve clinically?
- discriminate
- predict (prognosis)
- evaluate
usually have norms and are less sensitive to a specific patient population
ex: functional reach tests, TUG
generic test
more responsive than generic tests and designed to be used to compare to similar patients
ex: postural assessment scale for stroke (PASS)
diagnosis specific tests
normative values for age
–> peabody (peds), functional reach test (geriatrics)
age specific tests
berg balance scale –> postural stability
dynamic gait index –> gait
task specific tests
measure actual performance of an item/task at specific time and environment.
uses variables and results are timed, level of assist, distance
performance based tests
patient’s perceived ability through questionnaire
–> quality of life/participation
self-report tests
outcome measures need to be ______, _____, and _______.
______ is a bonus
reliable, valid, and sensitive
sensibility
what is reliability?
the reproducibility of the measurement when repeated at random with the same subject
