Exam 2- Lecture 10 (Radiopharmaceutics) Flashcards
What is radiopharmaceutics?
Radioactive drug used for diagnosis or therapy
Do radiopharmaceutics have any pharmacological activity?
no
When designing radiopharmaceuticals what do you what to keep in mind?
Easy availability Short effective half-life Particle emission High target to non-target activity ratio Sterile and pyrogen (substances that cause raise in temp) free Organ participation
What are radionuclides?
Substances that have the varying number of protons and neutrons as compared to stable elements
How is an atom identified?
By the number of protons in the nucleus
PET (positron emission tomography) what is it?
Emits high quality images to identify cancer and evaluate response to cancer treatment
What is radioactive decay? Types?
Refers to the particles that are emitted from nuclei as a result of nuclear instability.
Gamma: strongest of the three
Beta: can penetrate top layer of skin, germinal layer, where new cells are produced
Alpha: weakest of the three and cannot penetrate the skin.
