Exam #2 James Flashcards
- What do we know about the most likely candidate as the author of James?
Most likely James the brother of Jesus (Galatians 1:19), who also was one of the leaders of the Jerusalem church (Acts 15:13; Galatians 2:9).
Why is it unlikely that he is the apostle James, brother of John the apostle?
James was antagonistic to Jesus (John 7:5), but apparently came to faith after Christ’s resurrection, one to whom Jesus appeared (1 Corinthians 15:7).
- Approximately when was James written?
Late 40’s
- What is the purpose of James?
The encourage Jewish Christians to live in a way that demonstrates their faith.
- In what sense is James action-oriented and practical?
Active Faith (James 1:1 to 3:12). Wise Living (James 3:13 to 5:20).
Why did he write about behavior and action more than theory, according to the professor?
He’s action orientated.
More interested in the Christian behavior and life rather than doctrine and position in Christ.
- In what five ways does James describe living faith in the first section of the book (including what each means)?
The key to overcome all trials “testing your faith” ( James 1:2-18).
Faith doesn’t always have to speak or get angry, but listens (James 1:19), in order to do what is right (James 1:22).
Faith shows mercy with favoritism, (equity) (James 2:1-13).
Faith produces good works(James 2:14-26).
Faith enables us to restrain our speech(James 3:1-12).
- Describe the three ways James describes wise living in the second section.
Personal purity from the world (James 4:1-10).
Praying humbly for one another’s needs(James 5:12-18).
Restoring the sinning brother or sister(James 5:19-20).
- How do faith and works relate, according to James 2?
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26).
Faith without works is a dead faith because the lack of works reveals an unchanged life or a spiritually dead heart. There are many verses that say that true saving faith will result in a transformed life, that faith is demonstrated by the works we do. How we live reveals what we believe and whether the faith we profess to have is a living faith.
