1, 2 & 3 John Flashcards
What do we know about the author of 1-2-3 John?
The Apostle John
• He wasn’t mentioned in the books, but claims his own apostolic authority as an eyewitness of Jesus
• Probably closest apostle to heart of Jesus
What is the purpose of 1 John?
To encourage Christians to live in a way that demonstrates their identity in Christ
What is the purpose of 2 John?
To encourage Christians to love one another as they resist false teachers
What is the purpose of 3 John?
To encourage the church to be hospitable toward traveling ministers of the Gospel
What phrase depicts the thrust of John’s instruction in 1 John?
What five results to that phrase being lived out did the professor identify?
“Abiding in Christ” - remain so closely identified w/ Christ
- Love one another
- Keep God’s commands (don’t keep sinning)
- Testifying to Jesus’ leadership
- Live by the Spirit’s power
- Hope in eternal life and seek Jesus’ return
How do we interpret the figure of speech used to describe the recipients of 2 John?
“Chosen lady and her children”
Some take it as an unnamed woman who is hosting a church in her home in an unnamed city
Others think it’s a literary device, designating a local church and its members
How should believers respond to false teachers, from 2 John?
Do not let them stay in your homes
To whom is 3 John written?
What do we know about him?
To Gauis
Probably a leader in John’s local church
To what person is John reacting with his message in 3 John?
What is that person doing and why (possibly) is he doing it?
Diotrephes
They are NOT to do what Diotrephes has done - refusing hospitality to strangers and threatening those in the church who do
Possibly doing this to become dominant over other leaders; “ruling bishop” idea
