What is P’eau d’orange on the breasts indicative of?
Inflammatory breast cancer
What are the 4 motions you should as your patient to complete when doing a breast examination?
- arms overhead with palms together
- hands on hips and press down
- shrug shoulders
- lean forward
Recent onset of unilateral nipple inversion is indicative of what?
Underlying malignancy
What is a supernumerary nipple?
An accessory nipple
What are the 3 methods for breast examinations?
- Vertical
- Concentric
- radial
How would you perform a concentric search pattern of the breast?
Begin with the tail of Spence and move in a concentric fashion progressing from the outer breast and ending near the nipple
What are the 4 sweeps you should perform when palpating the axillary lymph nodes?
- 1st sweep: anterior axillary region to include under the pectoralis muscle
- 2nd sweep: Mid axillary high into apex
- 3rd sweep: posterior axillary region beneath teres minor muscle
- 4th sweep: down medial aspect of upper arm
What should you first inspect on the external examination of female genitalia?
Palpate and examine the inguinal nodes.
Inspect the pubic region
If the patient complains of labial swelling, what should you inspect?
The bartholin glands
How and why would you milk the female urethra?
- Insert index finger into vagina and gently apply pressure to the anterior vaginal wall as you slide your finger toward you. Note presence of any discharge.
- This may be performed if there was concern for infection
If you are planning to do a PAP smear, how should you lubricate the speculum?
Warm water
When performing a PAP smear, how do you use the spatula cervical sampling device?
Insert the spatula into the cervical os and rotate 360 degrees.
Rinse by swirling in the solution at least 10 times
When performing a PAP smear, how do you use the endocervical brush?
Introduce the endocervical brush into the cervical os and rotate 1/2 turn in one direction.
Rinse the brush by swirling at least 10 times
When performing a PAP smear, how do you use the broom?
Insert the central bristles into the endocervical canal, shorter bristles contacting the ectocervix and rotate clockwise 5x.
Push broom on the bottom of vial 10x then swirl vigorously. Discard broom.
