Exam 2 - Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are the four basic tissue types?
(1) epithelial (2) connective (3) muscular (4) nervous
What is a tissue?
Group of cells that usually have a common origin in an embryo and function together to carry out specialized activities
What is epithelial tissue and its components?
Covers body surfaces and lines hollow organs, cavities, and ducts
Covering and lining epithelium forms outer covering of skin
Glandular epithelium makes up secreting portion of glands
What is connective tissue and its components and types?
Protects and supports the body and its organs
Matrix - (1) ground substance - supports and binds cells together (2) fibers - strengthen and support tissues
Embryonic - (1) mesenchyme (2) mucous
Mature - (1) loose (2) dense (3) cartilage (4) bone (5) blood
What is muscular tissue and its types?
Cells specialized for contraction and generation of force
(1) skeletal - attached to bones, used for motion, posture, heat production, and protection
(2) cardiac - heart wall, pumps blood to body
(3) smooth - blood vessels, motion of other body functions
What is nervous tissue?
Detects changed in a variety of conditions inside and outside of the body and responds
What are membranes and the types?
Flat sheets of pliable tissue that cover or line part of the body
(1) mucous - lines cavity open directly to exterior
(2) serous - lines cavity not open to exterior
(3) cutaneous - skin
(4) synovial - lines cavity of freely movable joints
What is tissue repair?
Process that replaced worn out, damaged, or dead cells
(1) epithelial - division of stem cells
(2) connective - not all
(3) muscle - limited repair
(4) nervous - some are limited
What is fibrosis?
Formation of scar tissue
What are the three factors of healing?
(1) nutritional state (2) blood supply (3) metabolic rate
