Exam 1 - Chapter 1 Flashcards
What are the levels of structural organization?
Chemical, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What is anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy is the study of structure whereas physiology is the study of how body structures function
What are the six life processes?
(1) metabolism - sum of all chemical reactions (2) responsiveness - acting toward external forces (3) movement - internal and external actions (4) growth - enlarge and repair body (5) differentiation - specializing in a certain function (6) reproduction - continuing species
What is homeostasis?
Condition of equilibrium, or balance, in the body’s internal environment
What are the components of a feedback system?
(1) receptor - senses and detects body events, sends messages (2) control center - CNS receives messages to brain and spinal cord (3) effector - muscles and glands make the change (4) oxytocin - continues positive feedback
What is negative and positive feedback?
Negative feedback reverses the problem in the body (sweating to cool body temperature) Positive feedback increases the problem in the body (child birth)
What are injuries, disorders, and diseases?
(1) injury - acute, quick incident (2) disorder - temporary imbalance in homeostasis (3) disease - permanent imbalance in homeostasis
