Benzodiazepines - action?
bind to GABA receptors to enhance the action of GABA
What is GABA?
neurotransmitter that slows (calms) the speed of brain activity
Benzodiazepines - side effects?
sedation, decreased RR, decreased BP, decreased HR, amnesia
What is special about benzos?
fast acting!
“pam is riding in a benz, which is fast”
short term use only!
Benzos must be used with caution - they can cause?
dependency
What is the antidote to benzos?
flumazenil
SSRI - action?
Inhibit the reuptake of serotonin back into the neuron, thus more serotonin floating around in the brain therefore improving mood
What are SSRIs used for?
anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD
SSRI side effects?
weight gain, insomnia, sexual dysfuntion
Atypical: Buspirone uses?
anxiety, PTSD, OCD, panic
What makes buspirone special?
does not cause sedation or dependency
but make sure to take with food!
