Diminish the cough reflex by direct inhibition of the cough center in the medulla.

Four nursing conisderations for anititussives
- May be helpful at night to decrease cough/promote sleep
- Codeine/hydrocodone preparations no longer available d/t opioid crisis
- Do not use in COPD or productive cough
- Avoid the use of tessalon perles in psych pts

Liquid, gels, capsule, lozenges, and sublingual strips
