Exam 1 Vocab Flashcards
Chapters 2, 3, 15
Phrenology
pseudoscience, study of bumps on head and personality
Broca’s Area
used to produce speech
Phineas Gage
injured prefrontal cortex, change in personality
CNS
central nervous system, brain & spinal cord
PNS
peripheral nervous system, sensory organs & nerves
Dorsal vs Ventral
top vs bottom
Anterior vs Posterior
front vs back
Superior vs Inferior
top vs bottom
Lateral vs Medial
side vs middle
Contralateral vs Ipsilateral
opposite side of body vs same side
Coronal, Sagittal, Horizontal,
parallel to face, parallel to midline between hemispheres, parallel to ground
Meninges
membranes between brain & skull
Dura Mater
tough outer layer of meninges
Arachnoid Membrane
middle membrane of meninges
Pia Mater
innermost layer of meninges, touching brain, small blood vessels
Subarachnoid Space
between arachnoid and pia mater, holds CSF
Lateral Ventricles
2 largest ventricles, one in each brain hemisphere
Cerebral Aqueduct
connects third and fourth ventricle
Third Ventricle
on midline of brain, connects lateral
Fourth Ventricle
connected to third ventricle via cerebral aqueduct, near bottom of brain
Choroid Plexus
tissue that makes CSF
Cerebrospinal Fluid
fluid that brain contents float in, flow from lateral, third, fourth ventricles to subarachnoid space
Arachnoid Granulations
reabsorb CSF from subarachnoid space into blood supply
Obstructive Hydrocephalus
when CSF flow is blocked, CSF build up in ventricles make walls expand and cause blood vessel/brain damage
Forebrain
contains telencephalon & diencephalon
Midbrain
contains mesencephalon
Hindbrain
contains metencephalon and myelencephalon
Telencephalon
cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, limbic system
Diencephalon
thalamus, hypothalamus
Gray Matter
cell bodies
White Matter
axons
Sulcus
groove in surface of brain
Gyrus
ridge between grooves in surface of brain
Fissure
deeper grooves in surface of brain, if split open can remove chunks of brain
Lateral Fissure
between temporal and frontal lobe
Longitudinal Fissure
between hemispheres
Central Sulcus
between frontal and parietal lobe
Precentral Gyrus
rostral to central sulcus, location of primary motor cortex
Postcentral Gyrus
caudal to central sulcus, location of primary somatosensory cortex
Primary Motor Cortex
contralateral control of muscles, sections of tissue in charge of certain body parts
Primary Sensory Cortex
contralateral touch info, sections of tissue in charge of certain body parts
Primary Visual Cortex
visual info from eyes, in occipital lobe
Primary Auditory Cortex
auditory info, in temporal lobe
Primary Cortex vs Association Cortex
where sensory info is collected in brain vs where sensory info is analyzed
