What is urge incontinence?
- Also called “detrusor instability”
- Most common cause of incontinence
**Detrusor muscle response to small urinary volume with contraction; post void is less than 50 mL
How is urge incontinence treated?
Kiegel exercises
Meds:
- Ditropan
- Detrol
*****These medications relax the contracted bladder, but cause constipation, dry mouth, and affect the CNS–also, may cause acute angle glaucoma
What is stress incontinence?
Patients lose intrabdomianl pressure increases as with coughing, laughing, or lifting
How is stress incontinence treated?
Kiegel exercises
Alpha blockers
Estrogen in women
What is overflow incontinence?
Impaired detrusor contractility

What is functional incontinence?
Inability or unwillingness to toilet b/c of physical, cognitive, psychological, or environmental factors
