[Exam 1] Module 4: Respiratory System PPT Flashcards
Functions of Respiratory System
Brings oxygen to body
Allows exchange of gases
Protective features of Upper REspiratory
Hair filters the hair
Goblet cells produce mucus to trap material
Cilia moves teh trapped material toward throat
Layer of the Bronchial Tubes
They are lined with cilia which propel it up.
Cartilage, muscle, and epithelial cells are also here
How does a cough reflex occur?
When receptors in the walls are sitmulated, a central nervous system reflex is initiated.
Cough causes air to be
pushed through the bronchial tree under tremendous pressure, clearing the airway of foreign irritant
Respiration is controled through
pH and through the medullla in the CNS
Process of Respiration: Depends on balance between
the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
Process of Respiration: Depends on a
functioning muscular system
Controls over the respiratory system: Parasympathetic nerve stimulate
the diaphragm contraction and inspiration
Controls over the respiratory system: Vagal stimulations leads to
bronchoconstriction
Controls over the respiratory system: Sympathetic stimulation leads to
increased rate and depth of respirations and dilation of the bronchi to allow free flow of air through the system
Lower Respiratory Tract Conditions: Atelctasis
Collapse of once-expanded lung. Result of outside presure.
Comonly occurs as a result of blockage of airway
Lower Respiratory Tract Conditions: Pneumonia
Inflammation of lungs
Caused by bactreial or viral invasion of tissue
Manifesations are localized swelling, engorgement, and exudation of protective sera
Lower Respiratory Tract Conditions: Bronchitis
Narrowed airway during inflammation
Cause dby bacteria, virus, or foreign material infecting the inner lining of the bronchi
Obstructive Pulmonary Disaeases: What is included
Asthma
COPD
Cystic Fibrosis
Respiratory Distress Syndrome
