What is Interstitial Cystitis?
Chronic inflammatory and painful bladder disease.
It causes irritation,inflammation and scarring of the bladder wall.
What is the cause of Interstitial Cystitis?
No known cause.
What are the clinical manifestations of Interstitial Cystitis?
Urgency and Frequency
Pain at the Supra pubic, vagina, perineum and rectum
Remission and exacerbation (pain relieved by urination)
What are the Diagnostic tests for Interstitial Cystitis?
There are no specific tests but diagnostic tests are done to rule out UTI.
UTI symptoms but no UTI
What non-pharm care can be given to Interstitial Cystitis Patients?
Avoid bladder irritants- alcohol, caffeine, citrus, vinegar, hot pepper, nuts
Document a urinary diary of their elimination pattern
Stress management
Pain management
What medication can be given for Interstitial Cystitis patients?
Tricyclic Antidepressant-amitriptyline (Elavil)
It reduces burning pain and frequency
It is also used for long term treatment for relieving burning and frequency
