EXAM 1: Chapter 2 - Research Methods Flashcards
Five Steps of Empirical Research Process
- Statement of the problem
- Design of the Research Study - different research methods
- Measurement of Variables - types of variables, levels of measurement
- Analysis of Data: Descriptive Statistics
- measures of central tendency- measures of variability
- correlations
- causality
- measures of variability
- Conclusions from Research
Step #1 Statement of Problem
Deductive: From theory and then test
inductive: Form theory from data
Step #2 Design of the Research Study, Research Methods are?
Laboratory Experiment, Quasi-Experiment (Field Study), Questionnaires/Surveys, Observation and Archival Research. Meta-Analysis (Study of Studies)
Qualitative
Ethnography, Emic Perspective (group members view), Etic Perspective (scientific view)
Step #3 Measurement of Variables, types of variables and levels of measurements
Independent Variable - Changes to effect DV
Dependent Variable - relies on IV
Predictor
Criterion
Step #4 Descriptive Statistics
Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode
Measures of Variability: Range, Standard Deviation
Correlation does not Equal Causation
Correlation Coefficient is r. Closer to one is stronger.
Step #5 Conclusion from Research
Are results repeatable, generalization, causation or correlation?
Ethical Problems of Reasearch
Informed Consent Privacy Confidentiality Deception Prediction Debriefed Ethical Dilemmas
What is Academic Based Research?
Research done in University or other Academic setting, results generally not accepted by organizations unless the research becomes a thing on its own
What is Practitioner-Based Research?
Research done by professionals or practitioners outside of a university or academic setting. A practitioner is more able to conduct experiments such as giving different medications.
Scientist-Practitioner Gap?
Practitioners of organizations don’t accept scientific results as it was not done in the workplace, generally. Practitioners are unaware of I/O finding
