EXAM 1 (Chapter 1-3) Flashcards
Heterogeneous VS Homogeneous Mixtures:
Hetero- distinct layers, NOT uniform throughout the mix.
Homo- Uniform throughout the entire mixture.
What is a compound?
Mix of 2 or more elements!
What are Ions? How are they different from elements?
Ions are charged elements. They could have either cations or anions
What are Isotopes?
Variations of the exact same element, with different mass numbers(proton + neutron)
Remember Avogadro’s number, how to set it up!!
yes.
Ionic Bonds VS Covalent Bonds:
Ionic: Between metal and nonmetal. One of strongest bonds! Metals tend to give/lose e- to nonmetals.
Covalent: Between nonmetals, sharing e- together.
DEFINITELY LOOK AT NAMING!
Week 2, CH.3
What is Formula Mass?
Molar Mass on the periodic table.
Empirical Formula VS Molecular Formula:
Empirical: The lowest ratio of elements in formula.
Molecular: the TRUE ratio of elements in a compound. always a multiple of the E.F!!!
