Chapter 8 Flashcards
What does Electron Configuration show?
Particular orbitals that electrons occupy for an atom.
Electron Configuration VS. Orbital Diagram?
e- Config. may be written at ‘H; 1s^1’ while Orbital diagrams are written as an arrow in a box.
What are Degenerate Orbitals?
empty orbitals without any occupying electrons; all have the same energy.
Coulomb’s Law states what? (Know Formula!)
the potential E of 2 charged particles depend on their charges and separation.
Like Charges VS. Opposite Charges-
For like charges: E is +, decreases as ‘r’ increases.
For opposite charges: E is -, more - as ‘r’ decreases.
How do Like charges interact / Opposite charges interact w/ each other?
Like charges repel eachother, Opposite charges attract eachother.
what is Shielding?
electrons shield another electron from the full effects of the nuclear charge.
what is penetrating?
[When an e-] penetrates into region occupied by inner e-, experiences greater nuclear charge/lower E.
what is Hund’s Rule?
when filling Degenerate Orbitals, e- fill them singly first, with parallel spins.
What is Hund’s Rule the result of?
it is the result of atom’s tendency to find lowest energy state possible.
What are Valence Electrons?
The electrons in the outermost energy level/shell.
What are Core Electrons?
All the other electrons of the atom.
What is Isoelectric?
Ions with the same number of electrons.
EX: O^2-,F-,Ne,Na+
What is the Pauli Exclusion Principle?
No 2 electrons in an atom can have the same 4 quantum Numbers.
