Chapter 7 Flashcards
What is Electromagnetic Radiation?
Energy embodied in oscillating electric/magnetic fields.
What is interference?
waves react with eachother; cancel eachother out or build eachother up.
Constructive VS Destructive interference?
Constructive: 2 waves w/ equal amplitude are in ‘sync’ results in wave w/ x2 amplitude. Destructive: opposite occurs, waves cancel eachother out.
What is Diffraction?
when a wave encounters an obstacle/slit that is comparable in size to λ, it bend/diffracts around it.
Photoelectric Effect:
an observation that many metals emit electrons when light shines on them!
Why is the photoelectric effect important/significant?
Shows that electrons move very similarly to energy waves!
When do you use the Rydberg eqn? what does if solve for?
You can use the Rydberg eqn to solve for the difference in E. Also, to find the wavelength using simplified eqn, or to find a principle quantum #.
What is an Orbital?
a probability distribution map showing where e- are likely to be found.
What are the 3 quantum numbers?
Principle Quantum number= n
Angular Momentum Quantum number= l
Magnetic Quantum number= m(l)
