EXAM 1- Biomechanics of Human Movement Flashcards
What is biomechanics?
How a living thing moves
Instrumental in understanding how and why injuries occur
Rigid Body Mechanics can be split into…
Static movements
Dynamic Movements
What is static movement?
Object is still or not in motion (or in a constant state of motion ex treadmill)
When is static stretching good?
Helpful for after practice
Relaxes, increases range of motion
Sometimes good for before workout just to make someone feel better
What is dynamic movement?
Moving objects
Dynamic stretch
Can be split into kinematics and kinetics
What is kinematics?
Description of motion
Linear: Rectilinear and Curvilinear
Angular
General: Linear and Angular
What is kinematics rectilinear?
Straight line
A to B
What is kinematics curvilinear?
Not a straight line from A to B
More of a throwing motion
What is kinematics angular motion?
All points on an object rotate around a fixed point
What is kinetics?
The study of forces and the effects of those forces
Unit of measurement is a Newton (N)
Force is defined as a push or a pull
Internal vs External forces
Internal: Within ourselves
External: Outside our body
-Bicep Curl
Internal- contraction of bicep and tricep
External- Dumbbell and gravity
1st Class Lever
SEASAW
Axis of rotation is between the force and resistance
Effort force down-Axis-Resistance Force down
Head nodding
2nd Class Lever
WHEELBARROW
Resistance is between the force and axis of rotation
Axis-Resistance force down-effort force up
Calf Raises with weight
3rd Class Lever
Force is between the axis and resistance
Axis-effort force up-resistance force down
Bicep curls
What is a mechanical load
Load forces that can be classified into 2 categories:
Uniaxial loads- loads that are applied in one direction
Multiaxial loads- the direction of forces is different to each other
