Exam 1: Anatomy Flashcards
What is the proper placement of an animal?
Animal placed on left side
* Provides better access to abdominal organs
* Removes issue of puncturing 4 compartments of stomach accidentally
What are abdominal organs?
- Reticulum
- Rumen
- Omasum
- Abomasum
- Liver
- Gallbladder
- Small and large intestine
What does the reticulum look like?
What disease is found here?
Honeycomb texture
Hardware disease
Describe the rumen
- Biggest compartment of the stomach
- Site of fementation
- Contains papillae for absoption of volatile fatty acids
- Has a “shaggy” rug appearance
Describe the omasum
- “Butcher’s bible”
- Folded, book page appearance
- Site of water absorption
Describe the abomasum
- The “true stomach” of ruminants
- Most acidic region
- Break down of food
What is the purpose of the liver?
- Food processor
- Stores energy
- Produces bile
What is stored in the gallbladder?
Bile
What are the parts of the small intestine and what is absorbed there?
3 Parts:
* Duodenum
* Jejunum : Largest section of the small intestine
* Ileum: Attached to the cecum
* Nutrient absoption
What are the parts of the large intestine and what is absorbed there?
- 4 Parts Ascending, Transvers, Spiral, Descending
- Water absorption
Don’t really see disease here, more common in the small intestine
What is the purpose of the mesentery and what does it contain?
- Suspends intestines from the body wall
- Contains neurovascular bundles and lymph nodes
What does the pluck consist of?
- Esophagus
- Trachea
- Lungs
- Heart
What are hyoid bones?
- U-shaped bone that supports the tongue and larynx
- Hold the tongue and larynx in the skull
Describe the trachea
- Cartilaginous Rings (C’s)
- Brings oxygen to the lungs
- Branches into bronchioles in the lungs
What is the thickness ratio of the heart?
Left (Oxygenated) to Right (Deoxygenated)
1:3
- Right brings blood from the body
- Left brings blood to the body (left side is thicker)
What is the Caudal Vena Cava?
Large vein that carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the body
What is the aorta?
Large artery that carries oxygenated blood to the body
What organs are in the urogenital?
- Urinary Bladder
- Uterus
- Mammary Glands
Describe the urinary bladder
- Smooth muscle organ
- Ureters feed into bladder from kidneys
- Empties into urethra
Kidneys and urinary bladder are connected
* If there is a problem in one, there is likely a problem in the other
Describe the Uterus
- Smooth muscle organ
- Site of implantation of embryo
- Site of fetal development
Describe the mammary glands
- Site of milk production
- Comprised of: Alveoli, Udder (4 quarter), Teats
Normal appearance: pink, light, relatively clean
Describe the kidneys
- Located retroperitoneal (behind the peritoneum)
- Site of filtration
- Unique lobes
- Contains medulla and cortex when transected
Medulla: Inner (reddish) section
Cortex: Outer (dark reddish-brown) section
Describe lymph nodes
- Part of the Lymphatic system
- Located throughout the body
- Act as filters
Describe the diaphram
- Thin skeletal muscle
- Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
- Helps with respiration: Forms a vacuum creating negative pressure
- Numerous structures pass through it
