Vaccinations Injury reports Sickness reports Dewormer Farrier Any training Registration Leases/transfer of ownership
Describe what the value of keeping records is
Keeping records is important to do so the owner can keep track of what has happened to their horse. It helps them keep track with immunizations, dewormer, and farrier work. If the horse was to be said, they would have a “history record” for the new owners as well
On most farms/ranches/ranchettes there is more than one species being fed. What are some of the differences in feeds that could be deadly or harmful to another species on the farm? How would a normal person know this information without the fancy training you are receiving now?
Some feeds contain different levels of nutrients or some contain medications. You wouldn’t want to feed medicated feed intended for goats to horses. You also wouldn’t want to feed grain with higher levels of copper to sheep. A person would know this by reading the feed tag. Wven if they don’t kknow how to read the guaranteed analysis or ingredients list, feeds of this sort require warnings on the feed tag that they can read. Medicated feeds also have colored tags
Name 4 of the top 10 things everyone should know about feeds and feeding
- What kind of feed is it
- What species is it intended for
- What is the animal’s role? (performance, breeding, pleasure)
- How much does the animal get of the feed?
What role does biosecurity have in the prevention of disease?
Biosecurity is preventative measures to keep diseases from entering the facility including:
- quarantining new animals from resident animals
- foot baths
- cleaning the facilities
What is the role of roughage in the horse’s diet?
Roughage makes up the majority of the horse’s diet. Since horses are designed to be continuous grazers, roughage in the form of hay or pasture gives the horse fiber and keeps their digestive tract functioning properly
What are two things a feed tag does not tell you?
- where the ingredients come from
2. the percentage of each ingredient
