Ex. 3 Mechanical properties of the heart Flashcards
1
Q
What is preload?
A
the amount of tension (stretch) in the ventricular myocardium, precontraction.
2
Q
If you increase preload you also increase what?
A
stroke volume
3
Q
What is afterload?
A
the pressure the ventricle must pump against
4
Q
What are indices of cardiac preload?
A
- end diastolic volume (EDV) or pressure of ventricle
- Right ventricular pressure or left ventricular pressure
- Central venous pressure (entire heart)
5
Q
What are the indices of cardiac afterload?
A
- aortic pressure to left ventricle
- pulmonary arterial pressure to right ventricle
- increases in afterload can decrease stroke volume
6
Q
What is Frank Starling Law of the Heart?
A
Length tension relationship. As stroke volume increases in response to an increase in the volume of blood filling the heart when all other factors remain constant
