Ex 3 Lecture: BLOOD Flashcards
What are the functions of blood?
Transportation
Protection
Regulation
What percentage of body weight does the blood make up?
8%
What is the blood composed of?
Plasma
Formed elements
What is plasma?
liquid portion of blood
What is serum?
liquid portion of plasma that remains unclotted
What are the 3 major categories of plasma proteins?
Albumins (most abundant)
Globulins (antibodies)
Fibrinogen
Where are plasma proteins formed? What is the exception?
Liver, except globulins
What is included in the formed element component of blood?
Erythrocytes
Platelets
Leukocytes
What are the characteristics of erythrocytes?
contain hemoglobin
carry oxygen to tissues and cells
anucleated
Live for 120 days
Biconcave disc shape
What are the components of Hemoglobin?
Heme (iron containing pigment)
Globin (protein)
What does Globin consist of?
two alpha and two beta subunits
each subunit binds to heme group
What part of the heme group binds to the oxygen?
the iron part of the heme group binds reversibly with one molecule of oxygen
What is Erythropoiesis?
production of erythrocytes (red blood cells)
What is Hematopoiesis?
referes to the production of blood cells
What is leukopoiesis?
production of leukocytes (white blood cells)
