Ex. 14 Isolation of Antibiotic Producing Bacteria from Soil Flashcards
antibiotics
capable of inhibiting growth of other micro-organism
soil micro-organisms with useful antibiotics
Streptomyces, Bacillus, Penicillium, Cephalosporium
Streptomyces
filamentous gram +ive called actinomycetes (mold like bacteria)
how do streptomyces look
colonies embedded in surface, chalky (granular, powdery or velvety) mass of spores on an aerial secondary mycelium
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
fluorescent pseudomanads, gram -ive rod. important opportunistic pathogens. fluoresce under UV
Clostridium
spore forming bacteria, causes life threatening conditions. require anaerobic conditions
Bacillus
spore forming bacteria, not dangerous pathogens. aerobic conditions
How do Bacillus look
irregular shape and spreading, dull wrinkled and range from cream to brown
