Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is darwins theory of natural selection
A
- In a species all the individuals are different and show a wide range of variation
- This variation is due to differences in their genes ( due to continous mutations)
- Individuals with charateristics most suited to their environment have an advantage and are more likely to survive
- The genes and alleles that allow these individuals to be successful are passed down to their offspring .
2
Q
What is a species
A
A species is a group of similar organsims capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
3
Q
How does speciation occur
A
- A population becomes geographically isolated from an original population
- There are different environmental conditions in the new population
- Mutations in the genes may occur, creating variation in the population
- Natural selection occurs ,whereby organsims, that have advanteous alleles for this environment survive and reproduce
- The new population eventually changes to the point where it can no longer interbreed with the old population
- speciation has occured
