Q

charles darwins theory

A

Charles Darwin spent most of his life trying to answer the question about the amazing number and variety of different living organisms.

However he did not work in a vacuum, his theories were influenced by the work of James Hutton and Charles Lyell, to name a few.

Q

what is the modern theory of evolution

A

The modern theory of evolution states that all living organisms share a common origin dating back some four billion years. Over this long period of time, new species have slowly arisen and others have disappeared. Evolution is a process of change. Darwin also concluded that natural selection was the mechanism to explain the process of evolution.

Q

Charles Darwin explanation of evolution

A

Variation exists within any population of organisms.
All organisms face a daily struggle to survive and reproduce, whether it is to find mates, to seek shelter, to find food or to avoid predators.
Those organisms with features that best suit their environment have the best chance of survival and reproduction.
Those organisms that are able to survive and reproduce pass along their characteristics to their offspring.
Over time, the population will become better suited to its environment.

Q

inbreedng

A

Inbreeding - related individuals are allowed to mate, this method is often not used as it can lead to health problems.

Q

what is speciation

A

Speciation is the process where one species splits into two or more separate species.
it is responsible for the high level of biodiversity on Earth.

Q

what is the process of speciation that occurs in three basic steps

A

Variation
Isolation
different groups of the population are prevented (by geographical or climatic barriers) from interbreeding
Selection
Once populations are isolated natural selection affects the genotype of the populations separately.
