enzymes Flashcards
what are enzymes
Metabolism refers to the chemical reactions that occur in cells.
The reactions include building larger molecules from smaller units or breaking down molecules.
Some reactions release energy while others use energy.
enzymes
Enzymes are proteins that speed up specific reactions. They are biological catalysts that work by binding with its target molecule, called the substrate, and changing the substance into a different chemical called a product.
enzyme
substrate(s) ——-> products
what they do
link two substrates together to build larger molecules. For example cells use enzymes to link glucose molecules for make carbohydrates like starch.
break a substrate into smaller parts. For example, starch is stored in seeds, when they germinate they need glucose for energy so different enzymes break down the starch into glucose.
