Evolution Flashcards
Which ideas or events led-up to evolution?
Comparative anatomy and fossils
Which was the first scientist to propose evolution?
It was Lamark but the process he used was flawed.
Which work influenced Darwin and Wallace?
Thomas Mathug’s “an essay on population principle “ Natural selection idea came from this work.
Why dos Wallace ideas didn’t got much attention as Darwin’s?
When the two theories were presented they needed many changes so people could understand their content. The only one that did that was Darwin.
What were the questions raised after the theory of evolution was presented?
The missing links(fossils), no acceptance that the process was slow, each step of the evolution had to be functional.
How gregor mendel contribuited to the theory evolution?
Worked on patterns of inheretance with planta.
What is fitness?
The relative reproductive sucess of an individual.
What sexual selection generates ?
Generates sexual dimorphism seen in many species.
Examples of sexual selection and fitness in nature?
Rabbits became inmune to plague.
Darwin’s finches with different diets and morphology.
Peppered moths changed to darker colors during industrial revolution in England.
Why is it important for us to know about evolution?
To understand our world, history of population, medical reasons and for primary industries.
What is speciation?
- Accumulation of genetic incompatibility.
2. divergent select two environments.
What are the pre-darwaian ideas?
The biblical stories which nade people believe that the Earth was younger.
What is biodiversity ?
The variety of all life in forms- animals, plants, fungi , bacteria , etc. It can go from an ecosystem to individual species .
How many species are on the Earth ?
Estimates 7 million to 50 million.
What is taxonomy?
The practice of classifying diversity
What is species ?
Species are groups of interbreeding natural population that are reproductively isolated from other such groups.
What is reproductive isolation?
Don’t or can’t breed together and produce a successful offspring.
Types of reproductive isolation
Premating isolation: before the mating
Posmating isolation: after mating
What are some factors that contribute for a species for not mating?
Mate choice, habitat differences, breeding at different times, breeding may be physical impossible , fertilisation may not occur, hybrids die to early, hybrids can’t breed , hybrids are not fiting ecologicaly .
Issues with biological species concept?
Hybridization, What happens to populations that don’t occur together, What about groups that don’t use sexual reproduction, What about fossil species
What is the linnean system ?
Kingdom-Phylum-Class-Order-Family-Genus-Species
How is a name of a species composed?
Genus+ species name
What are the major causes of diversity loss?
Habitat loss and change
Introduced species
Disease
Over -harvesting/ hunting
