- Individuals in a species show a wide range of variation as a result of their genes and the random mutations they’ve inherited
- In every population more people are born than can survive

Because bacteria which is resistant to penecillin is more likely to survive

A bacteria which is resistant to antibiotics

The main ingredient in rat poison - many rats are now immune to it
