Evolution Flashcards
What was the name of the scientist who also proposed evolution?
Alfred Wallace
What did Wallace do?
He produced scientific journals with Darwin
What was Wallace best known for?
Studying colouration in animals, and the process of specification
What prompted Darwin to publish his theories?
The fact that Wallace agreed with him
What are the main principles of natural selection?
- Individuals in a species show a wide range of variation as a result of their genes and the random mutations they’ve inherited
- In every population more people are born than can survive
- Those with characteristics most suitable to the environment survive
How is antibacterial resistance in bacteria evidence of evolution?
Because bacteria which is resistant to penecillin is more likely to survive
What is MRSA?
A bacteria which is resistant to antibiotics
What have we done in response to MRSA?
- Antibiotics aren’t used for insignificant infections
- Patients have to complete the full course of antibiotics
- Restriction in agricultural antibiotics
What is warafin and how does it demonstrate evolution?
The main ingredient in rat poison - many rats are now immune to it
What is speciation?
The formation of a new and specific species
What is the human genome project?
The project to sequence all of the 3 billion base pairs in the human genome
