Evidence-basee Practice (EBP) Ch 5 Flashcards
Evidence based practice
Problem-solving approach to clinical practice that combines the best evidence with a clinicians expertise, patient preference and values, and healthcare resources in making decisions about patient care
(best evidence+ expertise+ patient preferences+ resources)
- Cultivate a spirit of inquiry
Constantly question current practices lead to consistent use of EBP
-EBP ends to tuitions demonstrate a culture in which nurses are encouraged to question practices
- Ask a clinical question
P =patient population of interest
I = intervention or area of interest
C= comparison, intervention or area of interest
O = outcome
T = time
- Search for the best evidence
Agency policy
Procedure manuals
Quality improvement data
Journal articles (peer reviewed)
- Integrate the evidence
-Begin to identify how to apply findings in to practice
-Apply the research in your practice, and use evidence as rationale
- Evaluate the outcomes of the practice decision/change
What is the change effective?
Are modifications needed
Should’ve changed be discontinued
- Communicate outcomes.
After implementing an EPG change, it is important to communicate the results
-Clinical staff on the unit
-Nursing practice council, or the research council
-Clinicians
- Sustain knowledge use.
-Sustained change is difficult, especially for large, healthcare organizations, such as hospitals
-Incorporate the change into culture in practice environment
-Use targeted strategies to sustain use of EBP decisions
- Critically appraise the evidence.
After reviewing and analyzing data for a PICOT question:
-Synthesize or combined the findings
-Consider scientific rigor of the evidence, and whether it has application in practice
-Determine the value, feasibility, and usefulness of the evidence
-What is the scientific worth of this information, and does it apply to practice
Nursing research
A way to identify new knowledge, improve profession, education, and practice, and use resources effectively
Performance improvement (PI)
•A formal approach for the analysis of health care – related process.
•It reviews how existing interventions within a process function.
* PI data often reveals problems that lead to EBP projects
Sentinel
Unexpected; involves death or serious physical events
