Evidence Based Dentistry Flashcards
What is Evidence Based Dentistry?
An approach to oral health care that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient’s oral and medical conditions
What is critical appraisal?
The process of assessing and interpreting evidence through systematic consideration of its validity, relevance and results
What are Randomised Control Trials the gold standard for?
For research questions about the effectiveness of 1 treatment compared to another
What does PICO stand for?
Population
Intervention
Comparison
Outcome
What is the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) used for?
the use of 8 critical appraisal tools designed to be used when reading research
What is the Absolute Risk Difference?
Difference in risk between groups
What are Confidence Intervals
The range of values the absolute risk difference will take in the population
95/100 the confidence interval will contain the true population
0=value of no difference
The CI should not overlap 0
What does the number needed to treat (NNT) mean?
The number of patients you would need to treat to prevent one patient from developing the disease/condition/outcome
1/absolute risk difference
What is the purpose of a consort statement?
Sets the standards on the trial’s design, analysis and interpretation of the results
What is a null hypothesis?
The claim that no relationship exists between 2 sets of data
What is an Odds Radio?
A measure of association between an exposure and an outcome
What does prevalence mean?
The proportion of a particular population found to be affected by a medical condition at a specific time
