Evans_Lower Extremity Muscles Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
largest extensor of thigh
O: posterior sacrum, posterior ilium, thoracolumbar fascia, sacrotuberous ligament
I: Upper Fibers- Iliotibial tract
LF- Gluteal Tuberosity of femur
A: extension of femur, external rotation of femur UF: abduction of hip LF: adduction of hip
N: inferior gluteal nerve
sacrotuberous ligament
(great or posterior sacrosciatic ligament) is situated at the lower and back part of the pelvis. It is flat, and triangular in form; narrower in the middle than at the ends connects at the ischial tuberosity
Iliotibial tract
aka IT band
innervation
excitation: the neural or electrical arousal of an organ or muscle or gland
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Hip flexor O: ASIS- anterior superior iliac spine
I: Iliotibial tract (it band)
A: Abduction, flexion, and internal rotation fo femur
Obturator Internus
O: inner surface of the obturator membrane and its bony boundraires I: Medial surface of the greater trochanter A: External rotation, adduction, and extension of the hip hockey stick with how it wraps around the
Gemelli
O:Superior: ischial spine Inferior: ischial tuberosity
I: Medial surface of the greater trochanter
A: External rotation, adduction, and extension of the hip (also, may do abduction - depends on joint position) one above and one below the obturator internus
Gluteus Medius
O: posterior surface of ilium (between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines) I: Greater trochanter of femur (lateral surface) A: Abduction Anterior Fibers: flexion and internal rotation Posterior fibers: extension and external rotation
N: superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Minimus
O: Posterior ilium (below the origin of gluteus medius) I: Greater trochanter of femur ( anterolateral surface) A: Abduction Anterior Fibers: flexion and internal rotation PF: extension and external rotation (not much)
anterolateral
both anterior and lateral
piriformis
O: pelvic surface of sacrum
I: apex of the greater trochanter of the femur
A: External roatation, abduction and extension of the hip
Quadratus femoris
O: Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity
I:Intertrochanteric crest of the femur
A: External roataion and adduction of the hip
iLiopsoas (psoas Major)
O: Superfical: T12-L4 and associated IVD Deep: L1-L5 transverse processes of vertebrae I: Lesser trochantr of femur A: HIP joint: flexion, external roation of femur Lumbar Spine: unilateral contraction bends the trunk laterally to the same side; bilateral contraction raises the trunk from the supine position
iLiopsoas (Iliacus)
O: Iliac fossa I: Lesser trochantr of femur A: HIP joint: flexion, external roation of femur Lumbar Spine: unilateral contraction bends the trunk laterally to the same side; bilateral contraction raises the trunk from the supine position
Iliac fossa
anetiro ear of the pelvis
Satorius
O: Anterior superior ilac spine
I: Upper medial shaft of tibia (together with gracilis & semitendinosus)
A: Hip Joint: flexion, abduction, external rotation Knee Joint: flexion internal rotation
Quadriceps Femoris Rectus Femoris:
O: Anteror inferior iliac spine Upper margin of acetabulum
I: patella via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
A: Hip joint: flexion Knee Joint: extension
Quadriceps Femoris Vastus medialis
O: Linea aspera (medial lip) of femur, intertrochanter line (distal part)
I: Patella via patellar ligament to tibial tuberostiy
A: extension of knee
Quadriceps Femoris Vastus Lateralis
O: Linea aspera (lateral lip), lateral surface of greater trochanter
I: patella via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
A: ext of knee
Quadriceps Femoris Vastus inter-medius
O: Anterior lateral femoral shaft I: patella via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity A: ext of knee
vastus intermedius sits under rectus femoris
1
acetabulum
socket where femoral head sits
Pectineus
O: Pecten pubis
I: between lesser trochanter and linea aspera of posterior femur (pectineal line)
A. Hip joint: adduction and external rotation, some flexion Pelvis: stabilized in the sagittal and frontal planes
Adductor Longus
O: Superior pubic ramus and anterior side of pubic symphysis I:Femur( linea aspera, medial lip in the middle third of the femur) A: Hip Joint: adduction and flexion (up to 70%) extension (past 80% of flexion) Pelvis: stabilizes in the sagittal and frontal planes
pubic symphysis
anterior junction of pelvis
Adductor Brevis
O: Inferior pubic ramus I:Femur( linea aspera, medial lip in the middle third of the femur) A: Hip Joint: adduction and flexion (up to 70%) extension (past 80% of flexion)
Gracilis
O: inferior pubic ramus below the pubic symphysis
I: upper medial shaft of tibia (together with sartorius and semitendinosus)
A: Hip Joint: flexion and adduction Knee joint: flexion and internal rotation
tibia vs fibia
tibia is medial and larger
