Evaluation for KC6 Flashcards
Research
Tuente found evidence of hostile attribution biases in people who behave aggressively. There is also a lot of evidence of confirmation bias in studies into the interpretation of the media. Confirmation bias has been shown to be an issue in the way people take in information from the internet.
Applications
Often applied in the real world. Overcoming our biases can reduce antisocial and negative behaviours. For example, understanding hostile attribution biases has been used in the treatment of offenders and anger management courses. Prisoners have been taught to interpret behaviour in a more rational way and think about their biases before responding.
Weaknesses
It ignores that FAE is not universal. It has not been shown in all countries. It is more likely to occur in countries with individualistic cultures such as the UK and USA. It has not been shown in collectivist cultures such as China. People in collectivist cultures are more likely to attribute behaviour to the situation.
