it does attempt to include the subjective experience of an individual
*acknowledges that the experience of the patient is important
failure to function adequately = captures the experience of many of the people who need it

when deciding whether someone is failing to function adequately =some one as to judge whether a patient is distressed or distressing
*some may say they are distressed but may be suffering
principle is that = only a psychiatrist has the right to make this judgement

when making a judgement = we may end up giving them a label that can add to their problems
*E.G it would be normal get depressed after the loss of a job or a relationship
^^^^^^^future employers/partner’s may attach a permanent label to that person
