Evaluation for deviation from social norms Flashcards
Evaluation
cultural relativism
- problem»>social norms vary tremendously form one generation to another
- person from one cultural group =may label someone from another cultural group as being abnormal according to their standards rather than the standards of the person behaving that way
- creates problems for ppl from one culture living withing another culture
Evaluation
deviance is related to context and degree
-making judgements on deviance=is related to the context of a behaviour
E.G person = wearing next to nothing on a beach= normal
HE the same outfit = formal gathering= would be regarded as abnormal
-social deviance on its own cannot offer complete definition of abnormality»_space;»> inevitably related to context and degree
Evaluation
social norms vs statistical norms
-STRENGTH= deviation from social norms approach =includes the issue of desirability of the behaviour
*statistical desirability does not take into account desirability
E>G genius is statistically abnormal»_space;>but we would not want to include that in our definition of abnormal behaviours
-^^^^social norms can be more useful than statistical norms
