Q

evidence for the role of vulnerability and triggers

A

P - evid to support the dual role of vuln and stress in development of sz
E - Tienari et al studied GV and parenting, found adoptive children of bio sz mothers more liekly to develop the disorder themselves, child-rearing characterised by high level of critic and low level of empathy
E - suggests GV and fam related stress important in development of sz and GV children more sensitive to parenting behaviour
L - strong direct support to adopt interactionist approach to sz including poor parenting as source of stress

Q

support for the effectiveness of combination of treatments

A

P - there is support for usefulness of adopting interactionist approach in comparing studies about effectiveness of bio and psych treatment
E - Turkington found x possible to combine treatments w/o adopting interactionist approach
E - studies show advantage of using combinations of treatment, randomly allocated to med, cbt, counselling comp to control with only med, found that decrease in sympt greater than control
L - clear practical advantage to adopting interactionist approach to form superior treatment outcomes
C - no difference in rates of hospital readmission

Q

we don’t know how diathesis and stress work

A

P - there is strong evidence to suggest some sort of underlying vulnerability coupled with stress can lead to sz
E - however we do not fully understand the mechanism by which symptoms of sz appear
E - DS model better accounts for individual differences esp in those who have same/similar genes as twins would’ve had diff interactions in fam, pre-natal env
L - therefore the usefulness of DS model is decreased because people have different interactions and genes

Q

the original diathesis stress is over-simplified

A

P - the classical model of single schizogene and schizophrenic parenting style is over-simplified
E - multiple genes can be involved to sz, small effect on it’s own, stress comes in many forms, inc x limited to dysfunc parenting, vuln and stress x single source
E - vuln can be seen as result of early trauma as well as genetic make-up, stress come in many forms e.g. biological, one study found cannabis use is trigger and childhood trauma is vulnerable factor
L - question temporal validity of old diathesis stress model
