-The church was very powerful
Crusades
-Usually seen in a Christian vs. Muslim context
-Christians saw it holy to be in crusades
-Cost a lot of money
-Usually to seize territory and reduce Islamic influences
-Christians were quite unsuccessful in their crusades
Consequences of Crusades
-Increase in xenophobia/intolerance between different religions
-Increase in power of Italian states
-Increased the role and prestige of the Catholic Church
Feudalist Society in Medieval Europe
Fief: Land given from one “higher authority”
Overlord: Owner of land
Vassal: Receiver of land
Western Europe & Women
-Women had more freedom in earlier times
-They could have jobs (spinning, weaving, brewing, baking)
-They had to paid the feudal lord by labor
-Lost independence by the end of the middle ages
