A

2nd smallest continent and 2rd most populous
Europe is about Borders and Migration

50 states

No clear natural border with the East
2/3 of the most serious conflicts are a short plane ride away.
Big political divide btw EU countries and non-EU countries
Core = Brussels
Ecumene: SE Ireland, England, Paris, Northern FR and GR, Malmo, Londom, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Prague, Dresden, Leipzig
Capitals: Brussels, Strausburg, Luxemburg
ENT: 1/3rd of old europe
Global Hegemony ended in WWII (from 16th cen was dividing world into colonial secotrs)
Central/Eastern Europe = Buffer zone
Maritime Europe = the most integrated geopolitical region
Balkans have huge historicla baggage that its an insult

Early urbanization (faster than EE and SEE but slower than WE. Shaped by GR + jewish culture.
Tradition of local and regional self gov.
Politically and economically oriented towards the continent and not towards overseas.

Crush zone and zone of contention

Shaped by Russian influnce during Russian Empire and USSR period

Yalta agreement - put it in USSR zone of influence
CW: feopolitical interest in the region waned but post-cw came back
Geopolitcal restructuring int he late 1990s
Southeast Europe - shaped by Byzantine culture, but also reshaped under long Ottoman rule

Western European Union providing a security frameowk for the Western part of Europe (exp. in 2010)
Europena communities in the Merger Treaty? with coal and steal and the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community.
Schengen 1980s Europe free of borders
European Union = 5th stage integration (worked its way up from free trade areas)

Stronger defense capability imporved burden sharing.
Cohen critized NATO enlargement
The risk of new geopolitical division (Kennan: the most fatal error of US policy in post war was NATO expansion)
Russia is scared of Ukr being a NATO member bc of potential expansion into the -stans
