Eukayotic Cells & Organelles Flashcards
What is the function of the cell surface membrane?
Regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell & contains receptor which can respond to hormones.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cells activities by controlling the transcription of DNA. This DNA contains instructions to make proteins. Contains chromosomes made from protein bound linear DNA.
What is the role of the nucleolus?
Makes ribosomes.
Role of mitochondria.
The site of aerobic respiration, where ATP is produced. They’re found in large numbers in cells and are very active & require a lot of energy.
Role of chloroplasts.
Site of photosynthesis. Some pats of photosynthesis take place in the grana and other parts in the stroma.
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus.
Processes and packages proteins and new lipids. It also makes lysosomes.
What is the function of the Golgi vesicle.
Stores lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus & transports them out of the cell.
What is the function of the Golgi vesicle.
Stores lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus & transports them out of the cell.
What is the function of lysosomes?
They contain digestive enzymes called lysozymes & can be used to digest invading cells/ break down worn down components of the cell.
What is the function of lysosomes?
They contain digestive enzymes called lysozymes & can be used to digest invading cells/ break down worn down components of the cell.
Function of ribosomes.
The site where proteins are made.
What is the function of the rough endo plastic reticulum?
Folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes.
What is the function of the Smooth endoplastic reticulum
Synthesises and processes lipids.
What is the function of the Cell wall?
Supports cells & prevents them from changing shape.
What is the function of the cell vacuole?
Helps to maintain pressure inside the cell & keeps cell rigid. This stops plants wilting & is involved in the isolation of unwanted chemicals inside the cell.
