Eukaryotic Transcription Flashcards
Basal transcription apparatus
Group of proteins that assemble near the start site and initiate minimal levels of transcription
Transcriptional activator proteins
Bind to specific DNA sequences and increase transcription by stimulating the assembly of the basal transcription apparatus.
Core promoter
Located upstream and is the site to which the basal transcription apparatus binds
TATA box
TATAAA
Eukaryotic consensus sequence -25 to -30 bp upstream of the start site
Regulatory promoter
Located upstream from the core promoter. Transcriptional activator proteins bind and directly or indirectly affect the rate at which transcription is initiated
Enhancers
More distant sequences to which transcriptional activator proteins bind. The DNA loops out to interact with the machinery at the core promoter.
TFIID
Transcription factor for RNA polymerase II - D. Binds to the TATA box which recruits RNA poly-II.
Rat1 exonuclease
Degrades RNA after cleaveage of the mRNA, catching up to the RNA polymerase and halting transcription.
