What are the three stages of ethos?

A
  1. Initial - ethos perceived before speaking
  2. Transactional - during the act of speaking
  3. Terminal - after the speaking engagement; product of inital and transactional

What are some qualities of ethos?

A

Ethos is impermanent (can change every speech) and it’s a cycle (goes back to initial after terminal)

Where do we base the inital ethos?

A
  1. 3rd party sources (e.g. neighbor, relative, etc.) who have actual knowledge on the speaker; via hearsay or word of mouth
  2. introduction of the speaker (either orally or a profile)
  3. non-verbal communication
  4. media (traditional/social)
  5. ourselves/personal experience/knowledge with the speaker

Where do the three types of rhetorics differ?

A

The judicial and ceremonial aims to influence a change in belief/opinion by labeling an act (former) or people (latter) as good or bad. The legislative/deliberative persuades the audience to act.
