Ethnicity-external factors Flashcards
What does Palmer say about Material deprivation
Palmer:
-ethnic minority groups are more likely to live in poor housing
impact on education:kids get ill and fall behind due to absences in class
-have extended families
impact on education:living in smaller houses with big families means not enough room for children to study at home,so fall behind at school and are perceived as lazy
-recent migrants may lack language skills+qualifications
impact on education:parents can’t afford to get kids supplies for school as don’t have good job and afford school trips, parents and kids are seen as not caring about education
material deprivation evaluation
- A lot of ethnic minority children such as chinese often outperform other students
- might not be material deprivation which causes underachivement but barriers within school
- could make children in material deprivation to work harder to succeed so they have a better life in the future
What is Berieten and Engelmans view on Language and intellect+evaluation
Bereiter-Engelmann
-children who don’t speak english as there first language in school are likely to struggle in school
-raise concerns about the language used by low income black families is ungrammatical+restricted.Incompatible for education success
-they will struggle to access reading resources and communicate with teachers
-if speak another language at home it will impede on educational success
all leads to under achievement
evaluation:
-could be internal factors within school not outside of school
-speaking a second language is desireable and better than speaking just one,not a barrier
What does Moynihan say family and parental structure
Moynihan-single parenthood in black communities:
- high rates of single parenthood is problematical especially for boys
- boys lack a positive male role model who can support them with educational success
- single mothers have lots of responsible such as paid employment and house work so don’t have enough time to help children with homework or attend educational events
- children left to do there own thing so slack in school and don’t try.
- Murray says that due to this they take part in disruptive behaviours which leads to a bad reputation in school
Lupton:Asian work ethic
-claims reason for Indian and chinese performing better despite barrier is due to parents attitude towards education-Asian work ethic
-Parents of these origins have very high standards for their children and will be supportive of teachers and schools
-have similar expectations to those in school and expect them to respect their elders
-chinese mums known as tiger mums+expect them to work hard and take part in extra curricular activities
evaluation:
-only focus on boys in singlehood and don’t considers girls
-internal facts might have a bigger impact
What does Sugarman say about Negative attitude towards education
Sugar man:
young ethnic minority people-particularly boys are likely to reject mainstream culture and participate in behaviours which challenge socially accepted norms and values
-BAME boys are likely to gravitate towards such subcultures.Have a fatalistic attitude that hard work will not benefit them.Prioritise immediate gratification and prioritise seeing their friends over work
evaluation:negative attitudes aren’t possessed by cultural factors but maybe due to schools and teachers attitude towards them
How does racism in wider society cause equality in racism
racism: refers discrimation
- impacts material and social experiences
- material deprivation
- social:feel socially excluded(marginalised)
