what are the basic concepts of ethics which apply to supplemental feeding?
respect for autonomy - informed consent, right to make own decisions
non-malfeasance
- protect the patient from harm
beneficence
- promote patients welfare
justice
- fair in dealing with patients and colleagues
what is involved in basic care?
oral nutrition and hydration
procedures and medication to keep the patient comfortable
this includes warmth, shelter, pain relief, management of distressing symptoms and hygiene measures
what are examples of life prolonging treatments?
cardiopulmonary resuscitation
artificial ventillation
artificial hydration and nutrition
specialist treatments i.e. chemotherapy/dialysis
antibiotics when give fo a life threatening infection
