Colorectal surgery Flashcards
what are the early complications of colonic resection?
general: - haemorrhage - infection - chest infection - DVT specific - intra abdominal abscess - anastomoses leakage - damage to surrounding structures
what are the late complications of colonic resection?
tumour recurrence
hernia formation
adhesion formation causing obstruction
what are the main anatomical relations to the right colon?
right kidney
right ureter
right gonadal vessel
duodenum
what are the main anatomical relations to the transverse colon?
duodenum
pancreas
stomach
what are the main anatomical relations to the left colon?
left kidney
left gonadal vessel
left ureter
spleen
what are the main indications for colonic resection surgery?
cancer benign polyps diverticular disease IBD cannot be treated with medications ischaemic colon perforation
what is diverticular disease ?
out patchings of the sigmoid due to weakness in the abdominal wall
how is diverticular disease treated?
steroids or surgery (sigmoid colectomy)
what is the presentation of diverticular disease?
most present asymptomatic
symptoms include bleeding, inflammation, perforation, fistulas
what are the advantages of doing laparoscopy opposed to open surgery?
less scaring less pain quicker recovery time shorter hospital stay quicker return to normal activity
what are the disadvantages of laparoscopy compared to open surgery?
long operation time due to difficult visualisation of anatomy and safe borders for tumour resection
previous abdominal surgery which causes adhesions will cause complications
what is the name of the surgery for removal of the right colon?
right hemicolectomy
what is the name of the surgery for the removal of the sigmoid colon?
sigmoid colectomy
what is the name of the surgery for the removal of the rectum?
low anterior resection
what are the main causes for a right hemicolectomy?
tumours/cancer
ileocaecal crohns
