Sportsmanship - Showing respect and fair play to opponents, and graciousness un both victory and defeat
Why is Sportsmanship important?
Sportsmanship is important for professionals as young athletes see them as role models
What are some examples of Sportsmanship?

- Kicking the ball out for an injured player
- Shaking hands after the game
- Accepting the officials’ decision
Define Deviance
Deviance - Behaviour that goes against moral values or laws of the support (Cheating is punished by officials)
What are some examples of Deviance?
Examples of Deviance
- Professional fouls
- Intentional high / late tackle in football / rugby
- Match fixing
- Use of performance enhancing drugs
Why do athletes use Deviance?
Reasons for Deviance
- Pressure to win / gain an unfair advantage / pressure from coaches
- Enhance performance
- Losing
- Gain financial reward
- Copying others (role models / teammates / coaches)
- Reaction to (poor) decisions from officials
- Result of taking drugs
- Retaliation
Define Gamesmanship
Gamesmanship - Athletes bending the rules, without breaking them, to gain an unfair advantage. The use of unethical methods to try to win in sport
What are some examples of Gamesmanship
Examples of Gamesmanship
- Faking an injury to waste time
- Taking injury timeouts in tennis to stop opponents momentum
- Holding onto opponents in boxing to aid recovery
Why might a player in a team sport be violent?
Reasons for violence in team sport
- Pressure / taunting from crowd
- Poor decisions from officials
- Frustration of losing
- Retaliation after a poor tackle / comment
- Over arousal during the game
- Influence of drugs on the player
